A Website Under Construction: I moved from WordPress to Wix

Well, I suppose I owe a bit of an explanation as to what exactly happened to the site. I have changed hosts from WordPress to Wix for a variety of reasons, and I thought I was able to import my posts, I still have to format them and add visuals back to most of them.

Why did I move from WordPress to Wix?

I could go on for a while about the reasons why I moved, but I don't want to create a post that could be seen as disenfranchising one website creation and hosting platform over another. After a lot of careful consideration, I realized that Wix just had more to offer me than WordPress did as far as their subscription plans. Sure, WordPress has all of the same features, but they aren't all rolled into one simple, relatively inexpensive plan. I would have had to pay more just to get the ability to download and use plugins on my website, and not being able to use plugins was very limiting for any of my ideas of where Diary of a Flopping Fish was going.

I have mentioned before that I do have aspirations of making Diary of a Flopping Fish multi-media, and I needed a platform that had the features I could need for whenever I may need them. In my previous WordPress plan, I could do part of what I wanted, but not all. For instance, I could monetize the blog, but I could monetize it with ads. I could set up an online shop, but I could not embed videos or podcasts. Primarily because of these limited plan features, is why I chose to seek hosting and a creation platform elsewhere.

WordPress is a Great Start

WordPress was a great place to start my blog back in 2016. I was able to start with a free plan and just get to writing. I still had a lot to learn about blogging, and I didn't even know how to create my visuals. The cracks in my subscription plan only surfaced when I decided to grow the blog. I did find the features to be a bit confusing when it came to designing the webpage itself, and I lost countless hours accidentally designing my page the wrong way that resulted in the home page being on every page somehow.

Why I Chose Wix

Ultimately, I settled on moving to Wix because they had all of the features I could want in one subscription, which included selling things on the website, monetizing with ads, and adding podcasts and videos right into the pages for a direct link to those hosting platforms.

In addition to the features, I also find Wix's platform incredibly easy to use, with features that are streamlined and also in sensible places. Instead of adding boxes for paragraphs and headings, I can just start typing and change them later. I can easily move images around to where I want them located on the page, rather than fighting with borders. I could use HTML if I chose (and if I knew HTML), while WordPress would not let me use HTML without a subscription upgrade. There is also an SEO checklist that is so helpful in not forgetting any SEO details. I'm sure there is much more to love about Wix, but I still have a lot to learn about the platform so time will tell.

Lots left to do

I have put a ton of work into this webpage so far to get it back into working order, but I still have a lot of blog posts to fix before this site stops looking like a load of garbage. Wix made moving from WordPress to Wix as easy as they could, but I have a lot of glamorous features to sift through and a whole website to redesign. I apologize for the mess and the lapse in new content, but please bear with me a bit longer. As soon as I get things all operational, I have lots of new stuff in store for you.

Diary of a Flopping Fish has been around for about ten years, and this blog has come so far from the start to where it is now. I want to continue to learn my craft and grow this blog. I hope that it can continue to reach people who are also struggling and that maybe it might offer some solace that they are not alone.
